Antiguan Rowing Team Departs to Create History

Tuesday 30th October, 2018-Team Antigua Island Girls departed the country today to create history as the first all black female rowing team in the 2018 Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Rowing Challenge.

The race begins in La Gomera, Canary Islands on December 12 and will end in Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua.

The team is comprised of Elvira Bell, Christal Clashing, Samara Emmanuel, Kevinia Francis and Junella King. They are aiming to break the women’s record of a 34-day crossing.

The team had to raise USD $150,000.00 in operational costs. They were supported financial by several local businesses including the Hadeed Group of Companies and APUA among others.

Cricketing legend and National Hero, Sir Vivian Richards was among a large group of people who saw the team off today at V.C Bird International Airport.

All teams entering the event support a cause and Team Antigua Island Girls has selected Cottage of Hope, a group home for orphaned and abused girls.
