Friday 8th February, 2019-The Minister of Health and Wellness has highlighted cases of abandonment of senior citizens at the Fiennes Institute and at the country’s lone psychiatric hospital.
Minister Molywn Joseph says many families have taken their relatives to the institutions and have not looked back. He noted that in some instances, families are capable of caring for those people at home, but they have chosen not to.
The health and wellness minister announced that the government is moving to deal with those who abandon their elderly relatives.
It was revealed there are no criteria under which people are accepted into the Fiennes Institute, except for the fact that they are old or at the discretion of those in authority at the indigent home. However, all that is about to change.
Residents will be re-located to facilitate the construction of a new Fiennes Institute. They will be temporarily housed at the former Nurses’ Hostel, once retrofitting of the building to cater to senior citizens is complete. They will be housed there for at least two months, before they are moved to the Margetson Ward of the old Holberton Hospital when it is refurbished.
The health minister told reporters all institutions that fall under his ministry will be given attention.
