Thursday 7th March, 2019-The man who was caught on video beating his step-son was granted bail when he appeared in Court today.
Karim Christian was arrested last week and charged with battery, after a video of him beating the 16 year-old boy in the family’s backyard went viral on social media.
In his first court appearance last Friday, Christian was remanded to prison until Wednesday, but when he appeared in court, the probation officer assigned to the case was not present. This caused the magistrate to send him back to prison overnight.
When Karim Christian returned to court today, he was granted bail in the sum of $ 2,500, with a cash component of $ 1,000 and two sureties. As part of his bail conditions, he must report to All Saints Magistrate’s Court every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. He was also ordered to stay at least 50 feet away from the virtual complainant and must not interfere with the young man directly or indirectly. Christian must give 48 hours notice if he intends to move from his current residence.
The incident took place in Freeman’s Village around mid February and sparked outrage among some family members of the young man who said the beating amounted to child abuse.
He returns to court on 8th July, 2019, when committal proceedings will begin.
