Monday 8th April, 2019-A flag raising ceremony this morning in the compound of the Office of the Prime Minister was held in observance of Antigua and Barbuda and the Republic of Cuba marking 25 years of diplomatic relations.
It was on 6th April, 1994 that the two countries signed an agreement with a view of strengthening diplomatic ties and enhancing cooperation.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Trade, E.P Chet Greene in remarks this morning thanked Cuba for its immeasurable support to Antigua and Barbuda in various areas of development, including health and education.
The Foreign Affairs Minister used to occasion to reiterate his country’s support for the Republic of Cuba, which he assured, will remain intact for decades to come.
Cuba’s Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, H.E Maria Esther Fiffe Cabreja told the gathering it is the respect for each country’s sovereignty that is partly responsible for the long lasting relationship that exists between the two countries.
Former Prime Minister Sir Lester Bird was acknowledged today for his pioneering work in signing the agreement with Cuba 25 years ago and the late Leonard ‘Tim’ Hector, for pioneering the scholarship programme that exists today.
