Thursday 2nd May, 2019-Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rhonda Sealey-Thomas has said the Freewinds that was quarantined in St. Lucia earlier this week has cancelled a scheduled visit to Antigua next Wednesday.

The ship belonging to the Church of Scientology and its 300 passengers were not permitted to leave St. Lucia, following a confirmed case of measles aboard the vessel.

A concert planned by Friends of MSJMC and Kuttin Eddge Band ‘Rock Da Boat’ was planned on board the Freewinds next Wednesday in St. John’s, with the proceeds expected to aid ongoing projects at Mount St. John’s Medical Centre.

Antigua and Barbuda’s CMO says they have been monitoring the developments and gleaned from the ship’s local agents that they will no longer visit next week.

The tickets for the concert aboard the vessel, priced at $ 50 have reportedly been sold out. Organizers are now meeting to chart the way forward following the latest developments. They are expected to reveal shortly whether the concert will go ahead without the Freewinds.

The vessel has been visiting Antigua for years and has assisted in raising funds for charitable purposes.

Measles is a highly infectious disease, which can be mostly prevented by a common vaccination. The United States is witnessing the largest outbreak of measles in a quarter-century, with more than 700 cases reported.
