Tuesday 26th March, 2019 –A family of three is homeless after fire destroyed their wooden house on St. George’s Street in the Point this afternoon.

The St. John’s Fire Department received the call shortly after 1 PM today, but when they arrived on the scene, the house and its contents were destroyed. No one was at home at the time the fire ripped through the dwelling.

In total, three fire stations responded as two neighbouring houses were threatened. However, firefighters were able to avert a disaster.  The two houses only sustained heat damage. Another house on the same property of the one that was destroyed was damaged.

The firefighters were kept busy this afternoon. Just approximately 100 feet from where the house was burnt to the ground, flying embers from a tree that was set ablaze ignited a shack. The inside of the shack was burnt out.

While they were busy controlling the fires in the Point, the firefighters received another call of a grass fire in Villa.

There were no immediate reports of damage to property in that incident.
